Computer Course

Kindergarten

Throughout the course of this year students will come to know the names and function of various components of a computer. They will recognize the uses of technology in our school and home. Students will also gain experience in operating a keyboard and mouse when using a computer to enhance classroom learning.

First Grade

Throughout the course of this year students will expand their computer vocabulary and improve their proficiency in the operation of input devices. They will continue to explore the uses of computers around them, and apply keyboarding skills while enhancing classroom learning.

Second Grade

Throughout the course of this year students will further develop their vocabulary and awareness of computers in their environment, and improve keyboarding skills. They will use a word processor in creating original work in conjunction with classroom instruction.

Third Grade

Throughout the course of this year students will improve their fluency in computer terms and operation. They will apply keyboarding skills in integrating classroom learning with original compositions, and utilize various software programs to expand their problem-solving skills.

Fourth Grade

Throughout the course of this year students will proficiently operate various input devices, select programs appropriate to their purpose, and both create and save work on a file server. They will begin working toward touch-typing proficiency, and expand their ability to use a word processor to generate original work in conjunction with classroom learning.

Fifth Grade

Throughout the course of this year students will work extensively on touch-typing skills. They will use appropriate programs to create original work, and then save this work on a file server. They will utilize the various editing features of a word processor. Students will begin exploring the uses of the Internet and will gather information from reliable sources.

Sixth Grade

Throughout the course of this year students will utilize word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation programs. They will become proficient at word processing and touch-typing while creating original work. The student will use the Internet to collect information and will examine the effect of this mode of communication on society.

Seventh Grade

Throughout the course of this year students will discuss the ethics of computer operations and technology. They will competently utilize word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation programs. They will become proficient at word processing and touch-typing while creating original work. Students will conduct research using the Internet in conjunction with classroom learning, and use the Internet to communicate with others.

Eighth Grade

Throughout the course of this year students will demonstrate mastery of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation programs. They will create and publish original work in conjunction with classroom learning. Students will touch-type proficiently and manipulate spreadsheet and database information for their purposes. Students will discuss various aspects of ethical operation of computers and the effects of technology on society. They will present individual projects demonstrating their competency in all areas listed.
