Everyone A Reader

A Volunteer Tutor Program

Everyone A Reader "EAR" is a volunteer reading tutor program sponsored by the San Diego County Office of Education.   The program relies on SMA parents and other community volunteers to offer special assistance and added practice in reading to some children who are experiencing some level of difficulty.

Everyone A Reader helps children in grades 1-3 during their normal school day.  The children individually read for about 15-20 minutes with the tutor, (Monday through Thursday, either Morning or afternoon, dependant on the classroom schedule).  They read at their own instructional level while the tutor listens and assists the child with learning new reading strategies.  This extra practice with one-on-one attention is documented to assess the children’s progress and provide feedback to the Teachers.  The Tutors work very closely with the Teachers to assist in the Children’s reading techniques and comprehension.  Tutors are delighted to make a difference in the children's lives.

The classroom teachers identify the children in the program, usually the Teacher chooses children that are at or just below Grade level to be admitted to the program.  The parents are informed about the program and must give their written permission before the child begins in the program.  We currently serve 16 children in the program - 7 first graders, 5 second graders, and 4 third graders.

We have 17 reading tutors that are specially trained in this program.

The books the children read are leveled according to difficulty from level 2 thought 12.  As the school year progresses, so do the children's skills.  The children make great strides in their reading ability as they move from one level to the next.  Children are monitored so that they are at a level that challenges but does not frustrate them.  The goal is to build confidence and enjoyment in reading.

Ann Killeen is the site coordinator for the EAR Program at Stella Maris Academy.
