Fourth Grade Curriculum

Religion

The students will recognize that the Beatitudes and the Ten Commandments can be applied to their every day lives. They will also learn how Jesus lived in the love of God, the Father. This is learned through discussion, dioramas and performances.

Language Arts

The reading program is based upon learning different genres through various chapter books. Within the books many literary elements are focused on such as plot, character, setting, theme, point of view, dialogue, simile, metaphor, climax and resolution. The grammar portion focuses on nouns, verbs, verb phrases, adjectives, pronouns and adverbs. Poetry, fiction, nonfiction, science fiction and historical fiction are studied. Cursive handwriting is mandatory.

Math

Students review concepts and procedures related to whole number operations, including single-digit multiplication and division; word problems that are incrementally developed and continually practiced throughout the year; continual development of whole number concepts; whole number computation; mental math; problem solving; patterns; functions; measurement; geometry; fractions; decimals; statistics; probability; exponents; square roots; percentages.

Science

Science concepts include simple machines, Earths oceans and plants and animals. Through hands-on activities and observations, the children relate science to the world around them. Air, water and temperature are also studied.

Social Studies

The focus is California history beginning with the regions and concluding with immigration. World War II is investigated. The main focus is how California grew with each new group of leaders.

Physical Education

Our physical education curriculum builds on the basic skills learned in previous grades. Skills involving team sports (softball, kickball, soccer, volleyball and basketball) are enhanced at this level. Skills of responsibility, leadership, tolerance for others, and cooperation in small groups and teams foster an appreciation of recreation and physical fitness as part of healthy living.
